A Glance to the Past: Okami

Released in the dark days of 2006 for the Playstation 2 Okami is a work of art in every sense of the word. Vibrant level design, unique characters, beautiful vistas and awe inspiring bosses it’s everything a gamer could ask for. While Okami won many awards for some reason it seemed to fly under many people’s radar during its original run. There’s good news though, just  like skyrim there seems to be a drive to port the HD version of Okami to every platform under the sun. You can now purchase Okami for:

  •  PlayStation 3
  • Windows (through steam)
  • PlayStation 4
  • Xbox One
  • Nintendo Switch

In Okami, you play the sun god Amaterasu who has been awoken from her stone sleep to protect the land from the evil sweeping over it. As you journey across Nippon you must seek out the Brush gods who split off from Amaterasu during her stone sleep. Each god you meet helps to unlock all of your godly power. Painting is the method of divine intervention and its artistry is woven into every aspect of the game from cutscenes to battles and even the overarching art design of the entire game. Simply put the game is beautiful, even in it’s darkest and most dismal of settings.

But is it for me?

I’m going to be very blunt: If you like Zelda you will love this game. It’s basically Wolf Zelda only instead of sages/triforce/spirits you are collecting gods and painting skills. There are so many side quests to keep you busy that you feel like the “too many limes guy”. Not up on meme culture? it’s this but with sidequests instead of limes:

Do you want to level up weapons, fight secret bosses, learn combat urination? It’s all here. You are frankly doing yourself a disservice if you love action adventure games and don’t play Okami. Plus, the name itself is a Japanese pun. Okami in Japanese means wolf however the kanji characters used as the title of the game mean great diety when pronounced slightly differently. That doesn’t add anything to the gameplay, it’s just a fun fact.

Go play Okami, it’s quirky, gorgeous and has a rather deep and involved story. Now if you will excuse me I have all theses sidequests to get back to.
